Do something!
Presentation of the new book about Czech and Slovak fanzines “Do Something!” with the participation of one of the authors. The presentation will be followed by a discussion on the topic and an afterparty is planned. The unusual publication will be appreciated not only by experts from the academic environment, but also by memoirists and actors of the independent scenes. The authors focus on the development of the modern independent press production of fanzines (from the English words “fan” + “magazine” = fanzine). Fanzines served the role of alternative media and helped create various communities and movements. Therefore, they represent one of the few sources of information on their history.
The monograph provides an insight into the phenomenon of fanzines in the Czech and Slovak environment from the 1980s to the present day, building on domestic research on samizdat as well as the works of foreign authors. The book focuses on various dimensions of fanzine production. It discusses the methods of production, distribution or content of selected titles and their role not only in subcultural environments. It is intended primarily for readers interested in the issues of alternative press, subcultures, the history of journalism, alternative lifestyles, but equally in the recent past.
