Festivals > Cultural Event

The name KUltúrne Podventatie was coined by combining the words cultural event, as the term is hardly used anymore, and the capital KU is inspired by the Russian science fiction film Kin-Dza-Dza! (1986).

The original aim of the project KUltúrne Podventie was to revive the urban space of the city from the castle, through the whole centre and to create a traditional urban festival. The event was situated in historical buildings (Trenčín Castle), public spaces of the city and also in local clubs and cafes within the city centre. The event provided a space for the presentation of music, literature, theatre, film and visual arts. The first three editions (2014, 2015 and 2016) of the KUltúrne Festival were organised by the Trenčianska kulturna jednota o.z. (TKJ), but in 2017 – 2020 the festival was no longer held. In 2021, by agreement with TKJ, the Kolomaž civic association – association for contemporary art(Klub Lúč – Open cultural space, festival Alone on the stage, Children’s theatre club…) will continue to organise the festival.

2014 – I.year

The first year of the festival took place as a one-day event at Trenčín Castle. 3 Slovak bands performed: YOU COCO, AUTUMNIST and SATÉNOVÉ RUKY and the documentary Le TOUR, directed by Dušan Bustin, was premiered.

The entire event was held for a voluntary admission fee

2015 – II.year

The second edition connected Trenčín Castle and the city centre and provided a broad spectrum view of contemporary music, theatre, film and literary art. During the two days, 21 groups, 69 artists from Slovakia, Czech Republic, Poland, Germany, USA, performed at the castle, the square or in the adjacent venues. All performances took place on three outdoor stages (Castle Big Stage, Castle Small Stage and the stage in the town centre square) and two club stages (Paddock, Coffee Sheep). An essential part of the programme were also theatrical performances for children, which took place in the Peace Square together with the music programme and were free of charge.
The line up of the festival was packed with musical names such as Mitch And Mitch (PL) – the Polish version of Mothy Python, shoegaze formation Manon Meurt (CZ), who supported the band My Bloody Valentine in Prague, or the great Czech talent dream pop Mayen (CZ). Headlining the KUltúrne Event are German space sound experimenters Sarros (DE) – a band made up of members of The Notwist and Lali Puna.
During the two days of the KUltúrne Event festival, Autumnist, Wild Tides, The Jelly Belly, Frank Winter, Genuine Jacks, Dj Nowhereman and Gramophon Brothers were also featured in the line-up.
In addition to music, the festival will screen Homo Ciris, 25km2 from Almostar, Uli Bia’s adventure film and Hungarian film Men with Balls, which was made as part of the year-long alternative distribution project of the best auteur documentaries from Central and Eastern Europe, the international Kinedok project. Visitors can also enjoy a reading by Skrat Theatre and a children’s performance by ZkuFraVon Theatre.

2016 – III.ročník

The third edition of the festival was again multi-genre.
In the morning, it started at the Peace Square with a programme for the children’s audience, but also for disadvantaged groups of the population and people with intellectual disabilities, with whom the festival cooperated and involved them in the implementation.
The pupils of the Karol Pádivý Art School from Trenčín presented their art, the youngest spectators were delighted by the ZkuFraVon theatre, but also young, promising musical projects from Trenčín and the surrounding area(Ticho, M. Kubečka, R. Fapšo & J. Vačko…)
Gradually, the programme moved through the historical streets, where art and craft performances were placed for the participants to try out. Literary readings took place on mini stages, and visitors gradually made their way to the castle courtyard, where the main programme consisting of bands, DJs and a theatre performance began.
The main star of the evening was the captivating Berlin musician Masha Qrella (DE) and her band. Pieces from her latest album, which by its very name refers to the infectious dance energy, were played by Pudding Mrs. Elvis. The group Sleepy Movement, which has released a new album after more than twenty years, performed. During the music night at the castle, the electronic project Bulp, melancholic guitarists Elections In The Deaftown and the unconventional combination of electronics and vibraphone – Stroon also performed.
The multi-genre nature of the festival was also underlined by the Kolomaž Theatre with the monodrama Fool played in the open air. In the literary section at the Coffee Sheep café, titled The inaugural convention of the First Poetry Party! Michal Habaj, Peter Šulej, Katarína Kucbelová and Zbigniew Machej from Poland presented their manifestos.
The whole castle was illuminated in the colours of the CULTURAL EVENT during the festival.
The festival was promoted through electronic, print media and radio in the Slovak Republic and the Czech Republic (Denník Pravda, SME, Radio_FM).
